Stephen Bell Hired in Skowhegan

Stephen Bell, Assistant Principal at Dexter Regional High School, has been hired as principal in Skowhegan. The following item is quoted from Education News Briefs (a weekly electronic digest of Maine education news from UM's College of Education and Human Development), which here summarizes an article originally appearing in the Central Maine Morning Sentinel (here).

Aspirations Promoted -The newest principal at Skowhegan Area High School hopes to convince more students to attend two- and four-year colleges. Stephen Bell, 38, grew up in Dexter, which, like Skowhegan, has lost many mill and manufacturing jobs in the past three decades. Bell said he will work hard to raise aspirations and make sure that all students are prepared to continue their education after high school. "My number one interest is making sure that all kids are college-ready when they graduate," Bell said. Bell was hired by the SAD 54 board last week. He will take over for retiring principal Gilbert Eaton III in July. Superintendent Brent Colbry said Bell has a wide variety of administrative experience. For the last seven years he has been assistant principal and athletic director at Dexter Regional High School. Before working in Dexter, he spent seven years at Piscataquis Community High School in Guilford, where he taught history and government, and also coached three sports. As an administrator he has a "student first" philosophy and believes in building relationships with everyone in the school community. -- Morning Sentinel, April 13

If Stephen Bell was hired in Skowhegan, why have they reopened their HS Principle search?

Mr. Bell's experience as a teacher is very limited, how is he qualified to really evaluate teachers and what can he add to any curriculum considerations?

If a Class A school said the Mr. Bell is a good principle. Then I'm glad he going to be my son's principle. Skowhegan has what about 900 students and over 100 in staff and Dexter has about 360 students and about 35 staff. Sound like he can do the job just fine to me.

Mr. Bell has never impressed me as a good role model for my son or daughter. If we had school choice, I would not choose DRHS with him in charge.

When I graduated from DRHS, we had an excellent faculty and administration. Mr. Bell would not have fit in. He is not a good role model for young people. My children would never go to DRHS with him in charge.

If any one of you did your homework correctly you would find out that Mr. Bell has plent of experience as a teacher, at least 8 years of teaching, before he became an administrator. I would be proud to have him as a pricipal.

Congrats on Steve Bell's appointment as the new Dexter HS Principle.

My children had the pleasure of having Steve as a teacher and a coach while he was at PCHS. Steve will do nothing but the best at Dexter and in the coming years those that disagree will finally come to their senses.

I disagree with those that oppose this hiring. I see Steve as a well educated man who has progressed very well in his career. I believe this is Skowhegan's loss and a great gain for Dexter.
