Something For Nothing?
There's a report in the Portland Press Herald about the City Council's "Quest for Data..." relating to grant funded positions.
In the community in which I have lived for most of my life there was a long standing opinion that grants had too many strings attached and that there might be hidden mandates.
Do you think that when a granter awards money for a program that there is real fund accounting, or is it treated "off the books"?
Should all grant funded positions be identified in each budget report?
Look, I'll definitely be following this story to see how accounting methods change, but right now I'm in a hurry to leave.
You see, it's Thursday, the new Uncle Henry's is out, and I want to check out the "Free for the Taking" listings!

Keep in mind that often "grant funded" positions are moved throughout the district. Board members probably are not even aware which positions are funded by State or Federal grants.
This is budget adoption season, so if you are the least bit interested in where the money being spent comes from, ask your board members to show you, or attend the meetings if you know when they're being held, and where!
Insist that all positions within the district are identified. It's your schools, and our money!
