SAT Scores: Math

The Department of Education has released the statewide SAT scores, in this link (MSExcel) and this link (PDF) from this page and this press release of December 28th. The SAT was taken in Spring 2006 by all 11th graders in Maine. It replaces the MEA formerly taken at this grade level. Reading, writing, and mathematics were tested.

This is the third of three posts presenting the data from area schools.

This data is brought to you as a public service. You're unlikely to find it -- ever --at msad46.org!

One obversation that I have is that the argument for small schools seems to be slipping away. The class A and B schools out performed DRHS in almost every test.

Some small schools did indeed do well.

As anyone would if they look at all the data would conclude, it is neither large or small class size that makes a difference. It is more the socio-economic background of the families and region that make the most difference.

Also, the amount of money spent for direct educational costs seems to make a difference. Interestingly, Nokomis has one of the lowest spending cost per pupil in the state. Their scores are too!

Bangor has one of the highest costs per student, and look at their scores.

With larger school sizes comes economies of scale and more opportunities for learning. Hence the call for consolidation and regionalization.

Something we should all look more carefully at.
