Regional Roundup: Resistence is Futile?

As one of our continuing services, at Voters we serve you up the news in bite-size portions!

  • Today's BDN presents an interesting set of issues regarding consolidation, in an article regarding SAD 53 (Pittsfield) and SAD 48 (Newport). Click here to read it, if you haven't already.
    Best paragraph:
Braun said it didn’t matter that the letter of intent with SAD 53 was denied since there is nothing in law that gives the letter any power. "We will continue to meet and continue our discussions and, if SAD 53 agrees, we will submit a plan by Dec. 1 that includes SAD 53."
    Second-best paragraph:
"Once RSU 19 is created, MCI really has only two choices," Braun said. "It can become a specialized academic school, such as John Bapst, that offers programming that is either unique or attractive enough that parents would be willing to pay extra to have their children attend, or it can expand its boarding population. But that should play no role in the creation of RSU 19."
  • In "Locals join group seeking to repeal consolidation" (Piscataquis Observer. September 19, 2007), we learn that 30 communities, including SAD 41, had representatives at a recent Bangor meeting of the Maine Coalition to Save Schools. They intend to use the referendum process to repeal the school administrative consolidation law. (The meeting was reported on by the Bangor Daily News here.) Good luck!
In other news, the struggle for citizen participation, a foundation of democracy, continues everywhere, in Orono and even in Dexter. "People everywhere just want to be free!"
