A New K-8 School For MSAD 46?

On Tuesday July 25, the library will hold a forum to examine the many aspects of this complicated issue. We invite the public to join us at 7 P.M.in an open and relaxed discussion of all the advantages and disadvantages of the proposed new K-8 school for MSAD 46.

In 1991 the construction of a new middle school to be built on property owned by Horace and Perry McKenney on Rte. 94 was proposed by the SAD 46 School Board. In a vote conducted in September of that year, it was defeated by a vote of 997 to 718. Exeter was the only town to vote in favor of the measure. Dexter voters soundly defeated the proposal by a 741 to a 475 vote. In the following years, SAD 46 middle school students have continued to learn under crowded and less than ideal conditions. Most SAD 46 residents agree that the present building needs to be replaced.

Since 1991 the school board has been discussing many options to replace the middle school: more recently with a K-8 school. This would mean closing the present schools on Abbott Hill as well as both the Garland and Exeter schools.

Questions over the site selected, the rational for building a K-8 school versus a middle school, and many other questions about the project have been raised by the public.

Area residents are encourage to bring their questions, comments, criticisms, evaluations, etc. This is your chance to contribute your thoughts and ideas to a positive and supportive discussion. Share with our community what you envision the future of the District's K-8 education program could be. Everyone will get a chance to be heard. Moderator will be Dave Pearson of Dexter.
