You Shoulda Been There: "A Lot of Inflation"

You won't find it in the Community Connection.

You won't find at the New School Project site.

You had to be there.*

The explanation for the $400,000 gap between the SAD #3 wood chip boiler** and the proposed SAD #46 boiler?

Theirs is at "final funding," that is, current, being built now, and therefore more accurately priced.

Our requires some blasting of ledge, for the truck dock and the wood chip storage bin.

Here's what got our attention: "Those numbers are inflated pretty good."

Now in the case of this boiler, the Superintendent made it clear that of the $843,000 budgeted, if the boiler comes in for less, the District doesn't get to keep the difference. The State will pay only what the boiler actually cost, up to $843,000.

The explanation offered for the "inflation"? If the boiler were to go over $843,000 that difference would need to be paid locally. Fair enough, and understandable. Still, a $400,000 cushion seems, shall we say, a bit much.

Just a bit later, the superintendent seemed to suggest that there was quite a bit of inflation built into the building budget, beyond the official (and required) contingency percentage.

Easy money! Other people's money!

* The Public Informational Meeting on Monday night at the Middle School. Aside from the School Board members present (7), and not counting employees of the District, there were six people present who do not receive checks from the District.

** SAD #3 project: 140,000 square feet, 1068 students $40.3 million total
SAD #46 project: 129,000 square feet, 800 students $30.5 million total

Unbelievable! To think that the architect would recommend that a more than adequate amount be budgeted to build a wood boiler...and to think that the state department of education fell for it... Why, I'm speechless!

Not only is anonymous speechless, he/she is also gutless!

If he/she has something worthwhile to say, why not take credit for it?

Why is he/she afraid to share his/her identity?

If the architect padded the boiler estimate for his own purpose or the district's advantage, don't you think he did the same thing about the pitched roof cost difference, so the local share of that cost would scare the voters?
