Philanthropist leaves scholarships for Maine children
Every child born in central Maine hospitals -- and eventually every child born in Maine -- will get a college savings account, thanks to a foundation established by philanthropist Harold Alfond, who died last month.
Latest information concerning the new pre-K–8 school project in SAD #46
The site work will begin immediately as equipment and materials were moved on site December 6, 2007. It will be very rewarding to see work being done as we drive by the site and begin to see the project take shape. The Sargent Corporation plans to be busy until mid-March when they will shut down for six weeks to avoid mud season. They plan to have a large percentage of the site work done by August 2008.
Maine Children's Alliance to offer new education report
Following up on the its groundbreaking 2006 report on public education in Maine, “A Case for Cooperation,” the Maine Children's Alliance will publish a new study of the progress Maine has made toward the goals of increased educational quality and greater efficiency throughout the educational system.
Petition: 330 signatures to date
We, the undersigned, do not support a reorganization plan in which the Orono schools become part of a Regional School Unit with Old Town and Union 90. We do support the plan to integrate Veazie, Glenburn and Orono into a Regional School Unit.
Yahoo! Answers, where 120 million users can be wrong
For educators fretting that the Internet is creating a generation of "intellectual sluggards," the problem isn't just that Yahoo!'s site helps ninth-graders cheat on their homework. It's that a lot of the time, it doesn't help them cheat all that well.

Just had a middle-class American honors student do a one-on-one book review with me. She read a Lincoln biography cover to cover.
About halfway through our discussion, she says, "Yeah, like I knew he was important, but this book really brought it home. And I had like no idea that he was assassinated."
